This policy applies to Smutlore websites, accounts, reader features, author tools, legal/moderation workflows, email communications, and related services. It does not apply to third-party websites or services we do not control.

Information We Collect

We may collect account information such as email address, sign-in tokens, user ID, role, display name, locale, and account status; author verification information such as legal name, date of birth, identity/age verification records, pen name, author profile, and payout/KYC information if payouts later launch; content and submissions such as stories, chapters, metadata, tags, reports, DMCA notices, counter-notices, support messages, and moderation appeals; reader activity such as reading position, bookmarks, follows, likes, ratings, search queries, page views, language preferences, and age-gate confirmation; device and log data such as IP address, user agent, timestamps, requested URLs, referrers, cookies, diagnostics, and security events; analytics and performance data; advertising data where applicable; and legal/safety records such as moderation events, takedown actions, repeat-infringer records, authority reports, and audit logs.

We do not intentionally collect personal information from anyone under 18. We do not intend to collect government identity documents from ordinary readers. We do not sell individual reading history.

How We Use Information

We use information to provide, personalize, secure, and maintain the service; operate age-gating, authentication, reader progress, search, rankings, and author tools; publish, format, moderate, classify, translate-link, and index stories; detect, prevent, and respond to prohibited content, abuse, fraud, security incidents, copyright infringement, and illegal activity; process DMCA notices, counter-notices, appeals, and legal requests; maintain age/identity and moderation records; send login links and service messages; analyze usage and improve performance; comply with law; and enforce our Terms and Content Policy.

Legal Bases For EEA/UK Users

Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, legal bases may include contract, legitimate interests, legal obligation, consent, and vital or public interests. Legitimate interests may include security, moderation, copyright enforcement, analytics, service improvement, fraud prevention, and platform integrity. Legal obligations may include records, notices, authority requests, child-safety obligations, tax/KYC if payments are added, and regulatory compliance.

Cookies

We may use cookies and similar technologies for age-gate confirmation, login/session security, language preference, reader state, UI preferences, analytics, performance, advertising, and frequency measurement. Where required, we will request consent for non-essential cookies. You can control cookies through your browser, but some features may not work without them.

Sharing

We may share information with hosting, database, email, CDN, security, analytics, infrastructure, advertising, moderation/scanner, legal, audit, insurance, payment/KYC/tax providers if monetization is added, and other service providers. We may share information with rights holders and users as required for DMCA workflows; with law enforcement, courts, regulators, child-safety organizations, or authorities when legally required or when disclosure is necessary to prevent harm or enforce rights; and with successors in a merger, acquisition, financing, restructuring, or asset sale.

International Transfers

Smutlore may process information in countries other than where you live. Where required, we will use appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses, adequacy decisions, data processing agreements, or other lawful transfer mechanisms.

Retention

We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary unless a longer period is required or permitted by law. Indicative retention: account records while the account exists and for a reasonable deletion/archive period; security logs for limited operational periods unless needed for investigation; published content while hosted and for backup/legal periods after deletion; moderation and safety logs as needed for audit, repeat-offender enforcement, legal obligations, and safety; DMCA records as needed for copyright compliance and repeat-infringer records; 2257-style author verification records for the legally required or counsel-approved period; and quarantined illegal-content records under the moderation retention and authority-reporting process.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object, port, or withdraw consent for personal information. You may also have rights to opt out of sale/share, targeted advertising, or certain profiling under U.S. state privacy laws. Contact info@smutlore.com. We may verify your identity and may retain some information for legal, safety, security, copyright, audit, or fraud-prevention reasons.

California and U.S. State Privacy Notice

If CCPA/CPRA or similar laws apply, the categories of personal information collected may include identifiers, internet/network activity, approximate geolocation, commercial information if payments launch, user-generated content, and inferences. We do not knowingly sell personal information of minors. We do not sell individual reading history. Advertising cookies may be considered “sharing” or “targeted advertising” under some laws; where applicable, provide opt-out controls and a “Your Privacy Choices” link.

Children

Smutlore is not for minors and is not directed to anyone under 18. If we learn that a minor used the service or provided personal information, we may delete the account and related information, subject to safety/legal preservation obligations.
